How sad that Dr. J has to resort to internet scams to make money.
I guess he didn't save anything from his basketball career.

When we were looking for a new home for our Saint Bernard we got a few e-mails from we guessed were dog fighters. They were all worded like yours (with the exception of the check part). They sounded like they were written by someone who spoke English as a second language.

very similar to the response I got from one guy, I'm selling a 22" flat screen TV on craigslist priced at $300...I deleted the response but the jest of it was
"I am interested in buying your tv,I live in Salt lake City, but the TV is a gift for my son on his birthday...I want you to ship it directly to him , he is currently visiting his mother in West Africa. I will pay you via a western union check and will give you $500 for your item plus shipping to his mother"

Typically I take the scammers email address and enter it in one of those "get a free xbox 360" sites to all the spam it will let me enter it in. That way they will have 100's of spam emails to sort through everyday! I have done it to about 20 of them so far.

Hilarious, Jeremy!

That scam gives itself away by saying, "If interested,". If it was legitimate, who wouldn't be interested?

"Only 30 mil...nah, not worth my time."

By the way, it reminds me of what I'd like to do if I did hit the jackpot. Don't quit but call into work every day to say you're not coming in again because you're still rich. Do that every day until they give you severance. Check out this scam from Craigslist (50)

Of course, that's easier said than done. I worked with a young guy years ago who had a 9-5 clerical job who won 3.3 million. He didn't quit right away but took a couple weeks off to "think about it", then quit. Just quit...jeez! It left his co-workers to play short-handed that whole time.

Plus I've never heard of a BARRISTER in the US, I think it is more of a British term. Do they have them in Canada? And setting them up with the spam usually takes a little while but totally worth it to me, just wish I could see their face when they open their email after it! I'm so tired of them posting ridiculous ads on Craigslist over and over, and they are always around $3,000, who falls for this crap?

FAQs

How does the check scam work on Craigslist? ›

Craigslist check scams are really easy to see and avoid: a buyer offers to send you a cashier's check to pay for something, but they want you to send it before the payment arrives. If you do send it, the check will either never arrive, or it'll be fake.

How to identify a Craigslist scammer buyer? ›

Similarly, buyers who ask for personal or financial information or offer to pay more than the asking price for an item are often scams. If something seems suspicious, it's best to walk away and look for a different opportunity.

Should you accept checks from Craigslist? ›

Use a secure form of payment

One of the most important Craigslist precautions is to be wary of scammers. In almost all cases, you are best off accepting cash for a Craigslist sale. Personal checks can bounce, and scammers can fake cashier's checks and money orders.

What can a Craigslist scammer do with my email address? ›

With just your email address, scammers can:
  • Target you with sophisticated phishing emails.
  • Find more sensitive information about you — including where you live.
  • Attempt to hack into your social media or other online accounts.
  • Impersonate you and scam your friends and family.

Which option is a red flag for a check scam? ›

Receiving a check or overpayment and being asked to wire a portion of the funds back. Being asked to provide your password, PIN, Social Security number, account number or financial information to someone who contacts you out of the blue.

What is an example of a check scam? ›

A fake cashier's check is sent, which the scammer asks the recipient to cash and then wire back the funds to cover the taxes and fees. Scammers might go to an online auction or classified listing site and offer to buy an item for sale, pay for a service in advance, or rent an apartment.

What can a Craigslist scammer do with my phone number? ›

The FTC calls it the Google Voice scam and say it can lead to someone using your phone number to conceal their identity and rip off other people. Here's how it works: The scammer sends you a message letting you know they're interested in buying your item. They may message you a phone number and ask you to text them.

How do you know if a buyer is scamming you? ›

A legitimate buyer will more than likely ask for additional information about the item for sale, such as the condition of the item. Potential buyers who ask for personal information like your email address or phone number or request the funds quickly are most likely scammers.

How do I make sure I am not being scammed on Craigslist? ›

Be familiar with Craigslist

Scammers often create lookalike sites to lure buyers into paying for items that don't exist. Always confirm the URL before finalizing a purchase. Craigslist does not back any transaction on its site. If you're offered purchase protection at a price, you're looking at a scam.

What is the safest way to accept payments on Craigslist? ›

Craiglist Safety Tips for Sellers

Request cash payment when exchanging in person. If you're shipping your item, use a service such as PayPal for more security. Never accept a money order; this is usually a scam. Cashier's checks can be forged, so exercise caution when accepting these.

How can you tell its a fake check? ›

If the MICR line printing appears shiny in the light and/or the characters are raised, the check is a counterfeit. In addition, if there's no MICR line at the bottom of the check, it's fake.

What is the best payment method to not get scammed? ›

By and large, credit cards are easily the most secure and safe payment method to use when you shop online. Credit cards use online security features like encryption and fraud monitoring to keep your accounts and personal information safe.

Can someone hack my bank account with my email address? ›

Can someone hack my bank account with my email address? Your email address alone is not enough for someone to hack your bank account, but if someone has your email address, they could potentially use this to extract more personal information about you that could ultimately help them to access your bank account.

How can you tell if a Craigslist scammer is selling? ›

If a seller encourages you to send a down payment or any form of money before receiving your item, this is a strong indication that they are trying to scam buyers. Some Craigslist scammers may ask you to send money to a foreign address because they “have suddenly been stationed overseas,” or something similar.

What happens if a scammer has your email address? ›

Once scammers have your email address and associated information, they can: Target you with sophisticated phishing emails. Your email address can be used to track down personal information like your phone number, where you bank, what online services you use, and even your home and work address.

How do you know if someone is scamming you with a check? ›

While there are many ways to fabricate a fake check, there are just as many warning signs of counterfeit checks.
  • Irregular perforations.
  • Missing check numbers.
  • Incorrect routing codes.
  • Odd magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) lines.
  • Notations in the memo area.
  • Stains or discolorations on the check.
  • Other discrepancies.

What happens if you cash a spam check? ›

Once a bank identifies a check as counterfeit, the depositor must cover the check's amount. Additional consequences include potential overdraft fees, late payment fees, and possible account closure. A negative banking history, such as being reported to ChexSystems, may result from depositing fake checks.

What is the safest way to receive payment on Craigslist? ›

Craiglist Safety Tips for Sellers

Request cash payment when exchanging in person. If you're shipping your item, use a service such as PayPal for more security. Never accept a money order; this is usually a scam. Cashier's checks can be forged, so exercise caution when accepting these.

What happens if you deposit a fake cashier's check? ›

If you deposit a cashier's check that turns out to be counterfeit, your bank will reverse the deposit from your account. If you have already spent some or all of the money, you are responsible for paying it back to the bank. Your only recourse would be against the person who wrote the check-in the first place.
