Why You’ll Love These Cool Whip Cookies

  • 4 ingredients. Cool Whip cookies are a fun variation of cake mix cookies, keeping the ingredients to a minimum! All you need to make these cookies is cake mix, whipped topping, an egg, and powdered sugar for coating.
  • Soft and chewy. These cookies are soft and melt-in-your-mouth, with crinkly tops and sweet, chewy middles.
  • Make them your own. Changing up the flavor of these cookies is as easy as changing up the cake mix you use to make them.

What You’ll Need

You only need 4 ingredients to make these soft, chewy Cool Whip cookies. Below are some notes. You’ll find a printable ingredients list with more details in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Cake Mix –Use any flavor of boxed cake mix you’d like. The cookies shown here are made with strawberry, funfetti, and chocolate cake mix.
  • Cool Whip –Thaw out a container of Cool Whip, or you can use homemade stabilized whipped cream.
  • Egg
  • Powdered Sugar –Rolling the cookie dough in powdered sugar before baking gives these Cool Whip cookies a similar look to crinkle cookies.

Can I Use Regular Whipped Cream?

No. Cool Whip and whipped cream aren’t the same thing. Cool Whip is oil-based and stabilized, whereas regular whipped cream is made by whipping air into heavy cream. As a result, the air in whipped cream dissipates in the batter, leading to a dry, crumbly cookie. Make sure that you’re using Cool Whip or a similar whipped topping when making these cookies.

Tips for Success

These are my best tips for perfect Cool Whip cookies:

  • The dough will be sticky. The Cool Whip in this recipe makes the dough very soft. If you’re having trouble scooping and rolling out your Cool Whip cookie dough, chill it in the fridge for up to 30 minutes. After, roll the dough in powdered sugar as directed.
  • Avoid over-spreading. If your kitchen is particularly warm, or if you’re concerned that your cookies may turn out flat, you can also chill the dough before rolling and baking (see the previous tip).
  • Powdered sugar is optional. Confectioner’s sugar adds a pretty, “snowy” finish to the baked cookies and helps a bit with sticking. However, feel free to skip it if you prefer (or if you don’t have any in the cupboard).
  • How do I know when the cookies are done baking? Cool whip cookies are done baking when they’re set and the cracks in the cookies appear dry (they’ll have a texture similar to chocolate crinkle cookies).

Cool Whip Cookie Variations

There are lots of fun ways to switch up the flavors in these cookies. Here are some easy recipe variations that you can try:

  • Use a different cake mix. Switch up the cake mix with any box of your choosing, such as vanilla, funfetti, strawberry, chocolate fudge, red velvet, and lemon cake mix.
  • Add-ins. Try adding in chocolate chips (white, milk, or dark), crushed freeze-dried strawberries, chopped pecans, toffee bits, crushed peppermint, or peanut butter chips. Customize your cookie add-ins to suit whichever cake mix you’re using.

Can I Make The Cookie Dough Ahead?

Yes! Get a headstart on your Cool Whip cookies and freeze the portioned dough balls before rolling them in powdered sugar. Flash-freeze the cookie dough balls on a lined baking sheet and then transfer the solid dough to a freezer bag. When you’re ready, thaw the dough balls in the fridge, roll them in sugar, and bake.

How to Store

  • To store. Store any leftover cookies in an airtight container on the counter for up to 3-4 days. There’s no need to refrigerate baked Cool Whip cookies.
  • Freeze. Let the cookies cool completely, and then store them in freezer bags or in a freezer-safe container. They can be stored frozen for up to 3 months and defrosted at room temperature.
