About the Programme
New 2024/2025
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film in the Faculty of Culture Creative and Performing Arts is designed to offer students a clear developmental path to achieving professional level film making skills.Students will practice the creative process of making cinema with contemporary digital technologies while developing critical approaches to unique personal expressions through formal and historical analysis of film movements, genres and styles.
What Will I Study?
In the first-year, students are exposed to introductory courses in film theory, multimedia practice and storytelling. In the second-year, students build on their introductory knowledge and skills and develop intermediate skills in the aforementioned areas with additional exposure to production management and documentary filmmaking. In the third and final year, students are equipped with advanced skills and knowledge in multimedia production and management, advanced screenwriting and postproduction to develop and execute clearly articulated directorial visions for their capstone projects.
On successful completion, the graduates of the BFA in Film will be able to:
1. Analyse the origin, history and traditions of motion picture technology.
2. Describe the roles and responsibilities of individuals and departments in the filmmaking process.
3. Apply legal and ethical practices to media production.
4. Operate production equipment (including lenses, cameras, lighting instruments, audio recording and postproduction equipment).
5. Create media images that demonstrate the principles of visual art and design.
6. Develop compelling feature-length screenplays.
7. Previsualize media production workflow.
8. Plan media production workflow.
9. Design film production budgets.
10. Manage film production budgets.
11. Apply conventional media practice to experimental media projects.
12. Manage digital postproduction workflow for cinema production.
13. Define a personal artistic voice and vision.
14. Lead creative teams in the production of compelling motion picture images.
Facilities and Resources
The EBCCI facilities include an art gallery, cinematheque, rehearsal room, performance centre, dance studio, computer lab, and pedagogical centre. The Walcott Warner Theatre is a multipurpose facility suited for all types of events, and seating up to 252 persons.
Apart from teaching, our facilities can also be booked for film screenings, meetings, workshops, seminars, lectures, event rehearsals. Features such as grand or upright pianos, AV equipment, sound and lighting are available on request.Learn how to book any of our facilities »

LEVEL I
Ten Level I courses (thirty credits) as outlined below:
1. HUMN 1001 Critical Foundations in the Arts (3 cr)
2. FILM 1000 Introduction to Film (3 cr)
3. FILM 1XXX Introduction to Digital Media Production (NEW) (3 cr)
4. CLTR 1100 Culture and Identity (3 cr)
5. FOUN 1006 Exposition for Academic Purpose (3 cr)
6. FOUN 1003 Introduction to Creative Non- Fiction (3 cr) OR FOUN 1004 Introduction to Argument (3cr)
7. Either:
- One (1) Beginners’ Foreign Language course (3 cr). Compulsory for students who do not fulfil the Foreign Language requirement* OR
- One Level I Faculty Elective (3 cr) where the foreign language is not required. This should be selected from any course coded CLTR, DANC, MUSC or THEA.
8-10. Three (3) Level I electives.

Ten Level II courses (thirty credits) as outlined below:

A. University Matriculation Requirements
The University Matriculation requirements for entry to a degree programme —
EITHER:
(a) Full Matriculation:
- (i) Passes in either two 2-unit CAPE/GCE A-Level subjects OR an Associate Degree of at least a 2.50 GPA, AND
- (ii)at least five (5) passes in CSEC (CXC) GeneralProficiency of at least Grade III (at least Grade II if done before 1998), OR GCE O’ Levels of at least Grade C or BGCSE examinations. Subjects passed must include English Language AND one of the following: a Foreign Language, Mathematics, Geography, or an approved Science subject.
OR:
b) Lower Level Matriculation:
- At least five (5) acceptable passes at CSEC/GCE/BGCSE examinations which MUST include English Language and any one of the following: a foreign language, mathematics, geography, or an approved science subject;
AND:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT:
English Language is compulsory for admission to all programmes of The University of the West Indies. Candidates who do not possess one of the following are required to take the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) before entry:
- (i) Grade I in CSEC,
- (ii) English A,
- (iii) a Grade A in GCE O’ Level English Language,
- (iv) a Grade 1 in CAPE Communication Studies OR
- (v) a Grade A or B in the GCE General Paper, OR
- (vi) Grade B OR higher in the BCC course CORE 100 English & Communication
B. Faculty Entry Requirements
3. The entry requirements of the Faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts are:
(a) a minimum of five (5) passes in CSEC General Proficiency Grade I, II or Grade III (Grade III if done after 1998), or GCE ‘O’ Levels at least Grade C, or BGCSE examinations including English Language;
(b) the entry requirements of the particular academic department in which they propose to take courses. These are as follows for the Creative Arts undergraduate programmes:
Interview/Audition: All qualified applicants to the BFA will also be invited to an interview and or/audition:
- FILM: Applicants specializing in Film are required to submit a creative work (film/video) of one to three minutes’ length, in which they played a key creative role (writer, director, editor). Alternatively, applicants may submit three film clips which have inspired them with brief notes as to why they have selected each clip. A photo-essay, photo-story and/or portfolio of photographs are also accepted with the submission.
