What Is A Limoncello Spritz?

A limoncello spritz co*cktail consists of limoncello, prosecco, and club soda in an ice-filled glass.

It’s a lemony twist on the popular Italian co*cktail, the classic Aperol spritz, where aperol is replaced by limoncello liqueur.

Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur that’s traditionally served very cold (straight from the freezer!) as an after-dinner “digestivo”, meant to settle your stomach and help you digest food. It originated in Italy’s southern region, including the area around the Gulf of Naples, the Amalfi Coast, and Sicily.

Recipe Ingredients

This limoncello spritz recipe is easy to remember as it follows the classic 3:2:1 spritz ratio = 3 parts Prosecco, 2 parts limoncello, and 1 part club soda.

Scroll down to the recipe card for the exact ingredient amounts and full instructions.

  • Limoncello – We usehomemade limoncellowhen we have it on hand, but it’s absolutely fine to use store-bought limoncello. Luxardo is a much respected brand, although there are many great limoncellos out there – they all just have their own flavor nuances.
  • Prosecco – Prosecco adds effervescence and a light sweetness to the spritz. If you like a drier drink, look for a drier prosecco, labeled “brut” or “extra brut.”. If you like a sweeter drink, look for a prosecco that’s sweeter.
  • Club soda – Club soda adds even more bubbles and dilutes the spritz a bit. Feel free to add as little or as much as you like. If you want to make a tall drink that’s lighter on alcohol, just use a larger glass and add more club soda.
  • Lemon wheel and fresh mint sprig – For a pretty look, plus fresh scent.

Recipe Tips & Variations

This limoncello spritz recipe is incredibly easy to make, plus it’s easy to adapt to your own personal tastes. Here are a few tips and variations on this lemony prosecco co*cktail:

  • Use chilled ingredients. Keep the limoncello in the freezer, the prosecco and club soda in the fridge. Then, when you’re ready to make this drink, it’ll be cold right from the start – and it won’t melt all the ice in your glass!
  • Make it sweeter. Different limoncellos will have varying amounts of sweetness, so taste test your limoncello spritz. If it’s too sour or harsh, add just ¼ ounce of simple syrup, then try it again. Add more if you like, until it’s just right.
  • Add more mint. If you like a minty drink, such as a mojito, then muddle a few mint leaves into the drink.
  • Swap out the mint. If you’re not a fan of mint, try fresh basil or a sprig of rosemary or thyme. Lavender is lovely, too!
  • Muddle in some fruit. Try muddling a few fresh raspberries (or blueberries or strawberries or blackberries!) for a delicious lemon raspberry spritz.
  • Add fresh fruit sauce. It’s easy to make a no-cook strawberry sauce, and this would be a lovely addition to this drink. A swirl of raspberry sauce would also be good.
  • Increase or decrease the 3 main ingredients. If you really like prosecco, omit the club soda and replace it with prosecco. If you’re craving more lemon flavor, add more limoncello. If you’d like to enjoy a super light drink, increase the club soda.

How to Make Limoncello Spritz for a Crowd

It’s easy to make a pitcher of limoncello spritz when you’re entertaining, so you can just relax with your guests. Here’s how to make a pitcher that serves 8:

  • Mix:In a large pitcher, combine a 750 ml bottle of prosecco, 16 ounces of limoncello, and 8 ounces of club soda, all pre-chilled, of course!
  • Serve:You’ll want to serve the drinks right away, as the bubbles will fade more and more as the pitcher sits. Simply divide the drink between 8 ice-filled glasses, then garnish with lemon slices and mint sprigs.
