How long is too long to be unemployed?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines long-term unemployment as a period of more than 27 weeks (or about 6 months). Half a year without a job is enough to give anyone cause for concern. To make matters worse, once you've gone that long without a job, prospective employers now have concerns of their own.

The prejudice against the unemployed doesn't just apply if someone has been out of work for a while; it can come up even if someone recently quit or lost their job. The research also found that telling potential employers you were laid off doesn't lessen any bias.
Seek out a variety of job postings, and create cover letter templates for each, so you will have them available when similar job opportunities come up. In your cover letter, explain what you've been doing while unemployed, and elaborate on why those experiences have been beneficial to you as a job candidate.
